When you're out shopping, what question's are you asking? Do you ask anything beyond, "What is the cheapest?" or "What is the best deal?" I wonder if we don't have an obligation, as people of faith, to be asking some different question's as well. Perhaps we should be asking things like, "Who is benefiting from this purchase?" or "How fairly are the workers being paid for this product?" I also suspect we should be asking questions like, "How will this impact the environment?" In a global community I think it's time for us to be thinking beyond ourselves and how our purchases impact us and begin shifting it to issues of loving neighbor and loving creation.
So, what question's are YOU asking?

living in a boonieville where the local grocery is hanging on by a thread... imagine my child in a candy store look when i stepped into a big chain grocery in the city. uh-huh... tempted to load up the cart. the produce section alone was about 4x the size of boonieville's market...
but then i remember, the folks who own & operate the grocery are church members; they are the EMTs that if I had to phone, would be on my doorstop in a heartbeat and not even blink about being awakened at 2am; they are the folks who put my groceries in my car and pet my dog; they are the grocers who when i went to pick up a special order of meat for a holiday event - had stuck a post-it on it and said, "this is on us. you feed us - we feed you."
that's just on a local level - but you are right, it certainly matters what questions we ask. i left the big corporate store with one thing in hand - that boonieville simply does not carry and even then i felt a bit like a traitor...
